Final Fantasy XIV Red Mage

This mage is, perhaps, the most powerful job in the game due to its mix between warrior and mage. They are a special caster job because they choose a rapier as a weapon. Red Mage is a DPS class (Damage per second), and they spend a lot of time attaching from a safe distance, but from time to time it is necessary they use their melee abilities. 

Red Mage, and Samurai, are the two jobs that were included in the launch of Stormblood. The first one focused on powerful spells and melee attacks, and the second one focused on strength and velocity. 

How to unlock Red Mage job

Side Quest ‘Taking to the Red’ info.

First of all, you need to know that unlocking the Red Mage is not part of the Main Story Quest. In addition, you need to have the Stormblood expansion and have reached level 50 of any Disciple of War or Magic. If you meet these requirements(none of them are difficult to meet), now you have to go to Ul'dah, one of the three starting cities of the game. 

Once you are there, head south of the Aetheryte Crystal. Go to the Steps of Thal, the main alley where you find a lot of vendors and traders. In the southern part of this alley, next to the Gate of Thal (the door that leads you to Central Thanalan), you will find the quest giver that will ask you to take on a quest.

The name of the quest is ‘Taking the Red’. The quest giver has the name of Distraught Lass above her name. This NPC will commission you to do a series of events.

This distraught young girl is seeking a savior for her sister. Her sister has been kidnapped by unknown people. According to the child's words, a traveler has fought against the villains, so they have seen what they look like. 

The first step is to find this traveler in Central Thanalan. When you arrive at the site, you find a red-garbed warrior dispatching the last of the kidnappers. After watching the cutscene, speak with the warrior.

X’rhun Tia

The traveler introduces himself like X’rhun Tia. Then the traveler will propose to you to come back to Ul'dah and give the good news to the Distraught Lass. 

Once you are in the city, the saved sister will tell you that the man is a Crimson Duelist. 

After confirming the child is safe in her home, the Red Mage NPC will suggest you share a drink. Go to the tavern south, to the Coffer Coffin, next to the Black Brush Station, and talk with the RDM. 

Impressed by your apparent strength, X’rhun Tia offers to teach you the secrets of Red Magic. 

With Soul of the Red Mage and Red Attire Coffer, you become a Red Mage.

Red Mage is a perfect mix between black magic and white magic. Most of the time, Red Mage attacks enemies from a safe distance with powerful spells, but from time to time they must attack melee to defeat some creatures and face the foe's abilities.

This character has a loop that is divided into two phases. The first one, the casting phase, is in which you generate your gauge resources. In this phase is when you should try to acquire Black and White mana. 

Balance Gauge

As a Red Mage is necessary that you keep in balance your two resource bars: the Black one and the White one. Black bar (Black mana) is related to spells such as Thunder or Fire. White bar (White mana) is related to spells such as Aero.

If the scale gets tipped in one way, then the other resource becomes harder to generate. 

When you keep the balance, the crystal of the top is red.

It is very important that you make a constant rotation of spells. This way will be easier for you cast different spells for different situations. In addition, when you reach a certain level of mana, you can enchant your repair and attack causing great damage.

If you perform actions in a certain order, you will increase the potency of them and apply combo bonuses.

Combos increase both potency and accuracy.
